Sheer Curtains

Quality sheers block 50 to 80% of incoming UV radiation while allowing diffused natural light through. This is enough to protect furniture, flooring, and artwork from the accelerated UV fading that Dubai's climate causes, while keeping rooms bright and airy. For rooms with very high sun exposure, choose a tighter-weave sheer or a voile with a UV-inhibiting finish.

Solution-dyed polyester voile and polyester-linen blends are the most practical choice for Dubai. They resist humidity, do not shrink when washed, and hold their colour against intense UV far longer than natural cotton or viscose sheers, which can yellow and weaken within 12 to 18 months of direct sun exposure. If a natural linen look is important, choose a linen-effect polyester blend rather than genuine linen.

Dubai's sand and dust settle quickly on lightweight sheer fabrics. Machine wash on a gentle 30°C cycle every 4 to 6 weeks. Most polyester voile sheers are fully machine-washable. Use a mild liquid detergent without bleach. Hang to dry immediately after washing; do not tumble dry as the heat can cause synthetic fabrics to lose their shape. Iron on a low setting while slightly damp if a crisp finish is desired.

Sheers alone are not recommended for Dubai bedrooms. They provide daytime privacy and diffuse light effectively, but they will not block the intense early morning sun that arrives before 6am in summer or the strong afternoon light in west-facing rooms. The standard specification for Dubai bedrooms is a double-track system with sheers on the inner track and a blackout panel on the outer track, giving you complete flexibility from fully open to fully closed.

For the best visual proportion, sheer curtain tracks should extend 15 to 25cm beyond the window frame on each side and hang from as close to the ceiling as possible. This makes the window appear larger, fills the wall with fabric rather than leaving exposed plaster either side of the window, and prevents side-light bleed when the curtains are drawn.
